The lead-acid batteries in these vehicles lose their charge over time if the engines are not run regularly to keep them charged.  Irregular use, or short trips, especially during cold weather, drains the life of the battery, resulting in early failure – and always at the most inconvenient time.

The answer is a “trickle” charger, whereby a low level current is fed continuously to a battery to prevent it from going flat or losing any of its charge.  Mains powered devices are tradionally used for this purpose, but apart from the cost of the electricity powering them, it often isn’t convenient or secure to use them.  This is the big advantage of solar powered battery chargers – they don’t require any mains power, which means they are easy to set up almost anywhere.

Solar car battery chargers have a solar panel that just needs to be rested near a window, or even on top of the vehicle’s dash, so that it gets free sunlight during the day to keep the battery charged.  Some solar chargers connect directly to the vehicle’s battery.  Other types feed power into the battery via the cigarette lighter/auxiliary power socket, which enables them to be easily set up inside a locked vehicle or boat for security.
